Paris Alternative Education is an education provider for learners with poor backgrounds and behavioural difficulties. I mainly provided classroom support for a variety of subjects and occasionally taught retail lessons. This really gave me confidence in the classroom and inspired me to really want to be a tutor. My highlight was working with an individual who was close to being expelled. We both gave up our break times to work on English skills and when I returned after the summer holiday, the learner had left the pupil referral unit to start Alevels. At this school I gained really good experience in classroom management and how to control students. Although it was very difficult at times I mostly found the students fun to be around and friendly despite the occasional severe behavioural problems. I honestly found the more difficult students to be the most rewarding as you could see them improve the quickest. Usually these students came from poor backgrounds and lacked social skills. Knowing this it was easy to empathise with them and teach them some boundaries. As this was my first teaching position before I was qualified I usually only gave classroom support but when tutors were absent I was the primary teacher. Here I began to learn how to lesson plan and adjust material to the students needs.

I taught a Pre-Sessional Academic English course to first year students and post graduates. I found this job highly enjoyable, I started and finished everyday looking forward to teaching my next. The core text (Language Leader) was be a bit dry and the grammar elements needed supplementing, but with a bit of work it was a good resource and the class and I seem to really enjoy it. I had two classes that were my responsibility that I shared with another tutor and other classes that I covered regularly so communication between the staff was really important. Although we worked closely together you also had to be very independent as the course leader entrusted us to deliver our lectures with little supervision. It was this that I appreciated the most as this was my first teaching position after being qualified and it gave me lots of pleasure to be respected as a teacher. It was really challenging and rewarding putting into action all things I had been studying over the previous four years and watching my students grow as English speakers.

At this school I have to teach a wide range of levels and ages. Usually I teach the Joy of Learning course book to students from 6-12 years old. My contract does not include office hours but I take my teaching responsibility seriously and put in a lot of extra hours communicating with the Chinese teachers about the pace at which the students are learning. The time with the students is structured into 4 hours with one of them being taught by a foreign tutor. It is very important to work together to deliver the best lesson possible making sure we do not cover the same material in class and focus on exactly what the students need. I have found this job the most challenge of all because it is the first time I have taught such young ages. As Songyuan is a small city in a far away place it is often the case that our school can't always find qualified teachers. Due to this when I first arrived at the school it was frustrating not being fully respected as a teacher. While here I have fought for more responsibility and have enjoyed winning the respect of the permanent teachers at the school and the students. The school also has high school students and I have delivered classes to prepare students for their English entrance exams. The school was recently awarded a contract at a chemical company in which I teach business English to the bosses. It has been really nice teaching adult learners again and has made me realise this is where I perform best and what I enjoy most. In these classes we use Cambridge University Press course books focused on business situation roll plays. I really enjoy teaching and preparing these lessons as there is usually no language focus and I have to think carefully about how best I can add target language into the material. I enjoy it because I get to use everything I have learnt about English and teaching so I find it very rewarding.
