Changsha Social Work College, Changsha, China: October 2013 – July 2014
English Teacher
I taught English to college students (17 to 20 years old) in China. To summarise this experience in a CV is impossible, as it was not
only a new job that I had to adjust to, but also an entirely different culture, country and way of life. I feel that living in China alone is
something I can be very proud of and shows my ability to adapt to any circumstance.
A summary of what living and working in China involved includes:
• Teaching more than 400 students every week and providing a stimulating and interesting new lesson plan each week.
• Preparing appropriate and engaging presentations and slideshows to further increase students’ understanding of a topic.
• Presenting to and working with an average class size of 40 to 50 students on a daily basis.
• Communicating with students and teachers who only speak a basic conversational level of English.
• Learning Chinese in order to communicate at work and in every day life. I have taught myself by self-motivated study and
by interacting with native Chinese speakers. I can now speak a good conversational level of Mandarin.
• Being flexible with working hours as they often change and do so at the last minute and having excellent time
management skills in order to effectively deliver a full English lesson across 1 hour and 30 minutes.
• Using my initiative, problem solving, public speaking, being a role model and responsible adult, being open minded, not
being afraid to do something different, being resilient when difficult or frustrating situations arise.
If my experience, or lack of it, is ever an issue in future employment, I know that the fact I have spent 19 months living and working
in China demonstrates how capable and independent I am and how I am perfectly able to tackle any situation presented to me.
Yasi Experimental Middle School, Jishou, China: September 2012 – June 2013
English Teacher
My time in Jishou was very similar to to my time working in Changsha, however there were a few key differences:
• I taught English to 12-15 year old middle school children. Class sizes were slightly larger and I would be teaching 50 to 60
students at a time, with 20 different classes, resulting in teaching more than 1,000 students a week.
• I was located in a much more rural area of China during this period of employment, so I had to ensure I still delivered a
high level of teaching, even when presented with very limited resources (i.e., chalk and a blackboard).
CJ Associates Geotechnical Limited: April 2012 – July 2012
Geotechnical Technician
Before I worked at CJ Associates, I had had no prior experience in this job role. Despite this however, I managed to quickly
understand what was expected of me and what I needed to deliver. Within my first month, I was working on my own and was the
specified technician/engineer in charge of supervising ground investigation work on various sites across the south of England.
Towards the end of my time at CJ’s, I was the main engineer in charge of drilling works and site investigations at locations around
the country.
