Work Experience -

ENGLISH TEACHER, JCFL Hospitality College, Tokyo, Japan, (September 2014 - present)

My main job since moving to Tokyo is as a college teacher in Takadanobaba. This is a hospitality college so the students are studying to work the hotel and airline industries. Classes are of between 20 and 25. 

ENGLISH TEACHER, Tokyo School of Music, Tokyo, Japan (September 2014 - present)

I am also working at a performing arts college. The classes are about 30 students studying to be actors, singers and dancers. I am required to teach them English appropriate for their desired industries. I design my own curriculum and tailor it to the students specific needs. 

BUSINESS ENGLISH TEACHER, WEP, Tokyo, Japan (August 2014 - present)

When I moved to Tokyo I wanted to diversify my teaching so I found work through an English dispatch company. They specialise in business English so I am working at different companies teaching the employees. I work mainly at Kito (a heavy industry company in Shinjuku) and also for the Japanese immigration department in Ibaraki. 

MANAGER, OEC English School, Osaka, Japan, (2010 - August 2014)

I was in charge of four English conversation schools across Kansai, heavily involved with both the organisational and teaching sides of the company. This is one of the biggest schools in the region and has more than 1,000 students in total. The students were a mix of ages and abilities. I taught a variety of lessons (grammar, conversation, business, TOEIC) using a range of textbooks and self-made materials.

In 2011 I was promoted to the position of Manager. I subsequently launched an ambitious staff retraining programme, revamped the school curriculum and hiring procedures, increased the number of staff from 26 to 48, and oversaw the moving of each school to a better, more modern location. These changes saw a massive increase in the stature of the company.

It was my responsibility to hire and train new staff, give weekly meetings, provide employee feedback, aid in the school's online and offline promotion, plan staff schedules and organise student events in addition to planning and teaching thirty classes a week. Teaching at OEC required a great deal of versatility, since each lesson had to be tailored to the students' individual requirements.

ALT, Naganokita High School, Osaka, Japan (2010 - 2011)

I made and taught English lessons to high school students. These lessons were primarily focused on improving the student’s listening and speaking. I also set and marked homework, wrote and scored exams and helped the other teachers at the school.

MANAGER, The Alex Bar, Osaka, Japan, (March 2013 - August 2014)

Seeking new challenges for both OEC and myself, I oversaw the opening of a bar in the fashionable (and competitive) Kitashinchi district of Osaka. Since then I combined my role as manager of the English school with being manager of this bar. This is a different industry, but my people skills and work ethic meant that it was successful. It also broadened my knowledge of what it takes to run a successful business. When I left Osaka I left my friends and former colleagues in charge of the bar and it remains open for business and serving tasty cocktails.

PRODUCTION ASSISTANT, ITV Studios, Manchester, England, (2009 - 2010)

After graduating from university I did an internship at ITV studios in Manchester, assisting the research and development of popular shows such as University Challenge. 

Education

- BA English Literature, Lancaster University, 2006 - 2009 (2:1 classification.)

- Studied abroad at the University of Illinois, 2007/08.

- Dissertation on literature in translation. I focused mainly on contemporary authors like Haruki Murakami but also wrote about a number of older writers including Yukio Mishima, Kenzaburō Ōe, and Kōbō Abe.
