2014- 2015        STUDENTS ACTION FOR REFUGEES (STAR), UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS

Volunteer English Teacher (October 2014 – May 2015)

§   Provide conversational classes to refugees from Algeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Iran, Sudan and Yemen to allow them to develop and extend their speaking competence

§   Organised Summer School programmes for undergraduate students in the Faculty of Engineering

§   Facilitated the co-ordination and logistics for M.Sc. Project Management and M.Sc. Engineering Asset Management Programmes

§   Prepared schedules for students and lectures for Summer School and training programmes

2008-2013                         JAPAN EXCHANGE AND TEACHING (JET) PROGRAMME, TOYAMA, JAPAN

English Teacher (2008-2013)

§   Taught 20 lessons a week to 300 students across all grade levels at two high schools and a specials needs school

§   Organised and contributed lesson plans to the Toyama Team Teaching Handbook, which is a published book that is given to all public schools in Toyama

§   Presented at the Tokyo Orientation for the JET Programme for three consecutive years (2010-2012) on lesson planning, presenting to more than 900 foreigners from 12 countries

§   Coached the first place student in the Toyama Prefecture Commercial English Speech Contest in 2012

§   Organized after-school English club activities for high school students

Prefectural Advisor, Toyama Prefectural Board of Education

§  First national from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in the 26 year history of the JET Programme to assume the role of Prefectural Advisor (2012- 2013)

§   Selected as one of only 10 JETs to participate in the ALT Opinion Exchange Meeting for the JET Programme, which is held every two years. Presented ideas on improving the Programme to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR)

§   Trained and supported 90 JET participants

§   Designed and organized a Teaching Skills Development Seminar and Orientation for 250 Japanese and foreign English language teachers that serve 40 high schools, over 100 elementary and junior high schools

§   Served as a judge for the annual Toyama English Speech and Debating Contests

§   Involved in carrying out various research at the Engineering Institute as well as other departments in the Faculty of Engineering

§   Duties included air quality and noise monitoring (on and offshore), radioactive testing at offshore oil rigs and stack emissions testing

§   Responsible for writing technical reports on air quality and noise monitoring

§   Provided training to new technicians and supervised field work tasks
