A major challenge was that the core-text supplied was not suitable for the students; I developed additional materials to supplement the curriculum to support and enhance learning. Traditionally, Chinese teaching is very tutor centered; while the most recent studies show that student centered learning is a more successful method when it comes to second language learning. Initially students tended to resist this approach, but through good rapport and students seeing their own improvement they soon adapted to this style. The best thing about this position  was the students; I would often partake in and organize lots of extracurricular actives, from cooking classes to trips to local historical sites.

A significant challenge I had to overcome in this position was adjusting to Chinese style education. Many methods and practices went against the ideology that I had learned. To tackle these differences I frequently had discussions with the director about how to improve learning at his school. He also gave me advice on how to adapt to a Chinese way of thinking.

I taught a Pre-Sessional Academic English course to first year students and post graduates. My main responsibility was to deliver English language sessions to overseas students to improve their IELTS score and develop their academic skills. Chinese education places value on being able to remember a lot of things while research, criticising and evaluating information are skills that are not held in the highest regard. To help my students I would often set lots of research tasks with no direct answers to help them develop their academic and language skills. Additionally I would introduce students to a range of independent learning strategies such as the Pomodoro Technique because Chinese learners study time is highly regulated and they often struggle with learning independently.

During my degree I did two one-month work placements at Motorcycle News. Obviously having a high level of literacy is essential to journalism. Working here gave me the experience of writing quality articles to fast deadlines.

Paris Alternative Education is a pupil referral unit for young learners that have been excluded from all other available schools in the area. While studying I would volunteer to help with classroom assistance and (occasionally) deliver retail lessons. Working with these students showed me the challenges faced by different members of our society and drove me towards wanting to make a positive difference in the world.
