Course Description: ESL Level 5 is designed to expound upon topics covered in Level 4. It will introduce students to college writing; how to use personal experiences, research, and critical reading to express, define and support ideas. Students will also develop vital listening and critical thinking skills via engaging videos, CDs and class presentations as well as lively class discussions and debates. Level 5, which is specifically designed as a college and TOEFL preparation class, will strengthen the necessary competencies to significantly enhance student performance in a college academic environment and on the TOEFL IBT.
Pre-requisite/program: Students should have successfully passed Level 4 or taken the ESL placement exam. Students must be able to read, listen, write and speak at college level to be successful.

The content for the 8 computer quizzes and 2 computer tests will come from the Pearson & Longman TOEFL Preparation Course class book. The paper based quiz material will be made up from objective questions (multiple-choice, reading comprehension, fill-in the blank, matching questions or identification) from class readings and/or listening assignments and homework. The quizzes may be either entirely computer based or a combination of computer/paper based. The lowest quiz score will be dropped when your final quiz average is computed. There are absolutely no make up quizzes for any reason if you are absent! A missed quiz is 0%.
Quizzes are 40% of your course grade. Short essay papers will normally be assigned for homework. All essay papers must be typed with 1.5 spacing between sentences, justified text and one inch margins on both sides. Preferred fonts are Times New Roman, Arial or Verdana with 12 pt font size. You will be provided with a sample of how your essays should be formatted. Always refer to the essay writing sample for guidelines whenever there are doubts about your essay’s proper format!
Attendance will be 10% of your grade. Students are expected to have a minimum of 85% attendance in order to pass the class. For example, this class is 12 weeks long or 45 (Not including Spring Break and Memorial Day Holidays) class meetings. 85% attendance is equal to 38
