English First (Guangzhou) 24/09/2016 – present - At English First I teach learners aged 3 –18. Children are taught key vocabulary through the use of flashcards and realia. Games and activities allow children to learn structures in a fun and engaging way, to keep them engaged and focused.
Teaching children can be very challenging and therefore, I apply various behaviour management techniques in the classroom to maintain order and to allow all students th opportunity to learn in a safe and inclusive environment.
For children aged 3- 8 I use a star system to praise them and to promote positive behaviour. I use UNO cards and other methods to praise higher levels on a point system to help motivate them to learn and by creating a competitive environment during games. At EF I have learned to adapt my teaching style to cater for children at different levels and have become more creative in my lesson planning.
Myerscough College (UK) 04/2016-06/2016- At Myerscough College I have taught GCSE English to learners aged 16-19 and adult learners. The learners were reading the novella ‘Of Mice and Men’ and it was my role to help them to identify language features such as adjectives, adverbs, similes etc. I reinforced the method of Point, Evidence and Explain to help learners answer exam questions.
In order to help learners, memorise the main language features that Steinbeck uses, I taught the learners the mnemonic ARIDE to help them plan their work in preparation for their exams. The writing section of the exam question requires learners to practice their writing techniques using persuasive techniques. Therefore, I taught them the mnemonic SPLAT and AFOREST to help them to structure their answer and plan their writing in the exam.
I have dealt with challenging behaviour however, I believe creative activities and lessons can overcome this as challenging behaviour often arises from boredom.
I have created interactive and innovative activities and differentiated tasks according to the individual learning styles and preferences of the learners. I have worked with learners who have dyslexia and also learners who have ADHD and autism.
I have assessed learners work through formative and summative assessments and have tracked and recorded their performance by creating individual learning plans which I used to inform my future planning.
I have also worked collaboratively with the English Department and updated my knowledge of my subject and practice through research and by attending CPD courses.
Preston's College (UK) 09/2015 – 02/2016 – I taught Functional Skills English to learners aged 14 and over in a college environment. I taught learners’ transferable skills to use in their personal and professional lives to improve their chances of finding employment. I create innovative, creative and engaging lessons and promoted the use of technology to motivate my learners. I differentiated my sessions to suit the individual needs and requirements for all my learners using a variety of learning styles to accommodate their needs. I worked hard to create an inclusive environment so that all my learners feel valued and respected.
I have taught SEND learners who require additional support and have experience working with learners with disabilities such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADD, ADHD and also learners with emotional and behavioural difficulties.
140 hour TEFL Course Classroom Teaching (UK) 09/2015 – During this course I undertook 20 hours of classroom teaching and learnt a variety of classroom activities. In addition, I had to conduct a 20-minute classroom session in front of my peers. I gained teaching methods and valuable experience of being in front of a classroom, which I really enjoyed. I also completed 120 hours of grammar online.
English Teaching Assistant Cyprus 05/2013 – 09/2013 and 06/2014- 04/2015– During the summer holidays I worked as a teaching assistant in a kindergarten and helped teach English to children aged 1-10. I then went back to Cyprus the following year after graduating in 2014 to gain more experience in teaching ESOL.
Cyprus 09/2012 – 05/2013 – I was studying abroad at the European University Cyprus and taught English to adult students privately. The lessons lasted for up to an hour and were based on English speaking, reading and grammar. I would place a strong emphasis on pronunciation for example I would pronounce the word and get the student to repeat after me. In addition to this I would give learners gap fills, mix and match activities and texts to analyse to develop their reading and writing skills. Learners would also practise their conversational skills to improve their spoken English. Teaching adults at University level enabled me to gain experience of teaching learners at various levels from low, intermediate to advance level. I also helped learners to proofread and edit their work and also helped to prepare them for their examinations.
