Teaching Experience

I have over 5 years teaching experience in China and South Korea as an ESL teacher as well as one year working part time as a teacher aide in a New Zealand public school. Details as follows:

Public School English Teacher, South Korea

Haenam, Jeollanam-do, April 2015 – April 2017

Contracted through the Jeollanam-do Office of Education to work at Hwangsan Elementary School and Haenam Technical High School in Haenam County. Responsibilities included working closely with several Korean co-teachers to plan, teach, and test the English language curriculum for grades 3-6 elementary and first year high school. Planning required considering the language ability of each individual student and the dynamics of each class as well as creating and marking homework assignments that both matched the target language and were enjoyable for the students. Rewards systems that motivated students to participate and excel were also implemented. Responsibilities between semesters included planning, budgeting and implementing English camps for elementary students. Each camp was individually tailored to meet the requirements of the school principal and the students’ levels.

CCAP Presenter (Cross Cultural Awareness Programme) 2016

Introducing high school students to the culture of New Zealand through an interactive 2-hour presentation throughout the Jeollanam-do province.

Iksan, South Korea November 2010 – December 2012, and July – December 2014

Employed by Wonkwang University for 2.5 years to work in the Korean public school system teaching English to elementary and middle school students. Responsibilities were similar to that in Haenam with the exception of working for more schools and changing schools on a regular basis. This required working with many different co-teachers and vastly differing student levels. Responsibilities between semesters included scheduling and planning summer and winter camps for multiple schools involving planning lessons, activities, and student marking procedures.

University English Instructor, Shenyang, China, November 2013 – July 2014.

Employed by Shenyang Institute of Engineering as a Business English teacher for Liaoning University. Responsibilities included forming an adequate curriculum based on approved textbooks, monitoring students' progress and English fluency, and setting and marking all assessment for the Business English course.

Worked one-on-one with children with challenging behaviour to enable them to manage in a classroom setting.

Other Work Experience

2007 - 2009 Whitcoulls Shirley, Assistant Store Manager

Responsible for managing the day to day running of a busy bookstore. Responsibilities included staff management, staff training and hiring, resourcing, budgeting, sales, and merchandising whilst maintaining store standards and striving to achieve personal and store targets.

2007 LEP International, Customer Service Imports Department

Working within a close team, assisting with all the importation needs of national and international clients. Responsibilities included liaison with logistics personnel to ensure timely arrival of goods.

2001 - 2006 Hallensteins Brothers' Limited, Assistant Store Manager

Worked for over five years both in management and sales in New Zealand's largest menswear retailer. Knowledge and experience in the sales process was gained through teaching, coaching and supporting staff individually and as a team to achieve sales and store standards set out by senior management. Also managed differing stores’ merchandising and promotional set ups.

Qualifications

University Education

Bachelor of Commerce specialising in Marketing and Business Management. Graduated in 2007 from Lincoln University, Christchurch, New Zealand.

Diploma in Applied Recreation majoring in Community Recreation. Graduated in 2004 from Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, Christchurch, New Zealand.

ESL Education

100 hour TEFL course, which included:

40 hour i-to-i TEFL course.

20 hour i-to-i TEFL weekend course. An intensive weekend with a focus on practical teaching experience and observing teaching practice.

20 hour i-to-i TEFL grammar awareness specialist TEFL course. 10 hour i-to-I TEFL business English specialist course.
10 hour i-to-I TEFL teaching with limited resources course.

Iksan Office of Education and Howard County Public School System 2 week intensive English teaching training course.
