Teaching Experience

I have over 5 years of full time teaching experience in China and South Korea, as well as 5 years of part time teaching experience in New Zealand. This is as follows:

Public School English Teacher, South Korea

 Haenam, Jeollanamdo, April 2015 – April 2017

Teaching: Was employed by the Jeollanamdo Office of Education to teach English at Haenam High

School. Responsibilities included: creating a curriculum for grade 1 and grade 2 high school students focusing on both oral and written English; setting up lesson plans specific to each class taking into consideration English ability and class dynamics; assessing students’ English ability through both speaking tests and written examinations; setting and marking homework and assignments; assisting with exam writing, supervision and marking; and reporting progress to the head of English. Between semesters, additional responsibilities included scheduling and planning summer and winter English camps which involved planning lessons, activities, budgeting, and student marking procedures.

Training: Was requested by the Jeollanamdo Board of Education to assist with providing training for new English teachers arriving in Korea. This was done by giving a 2 hour presentation for every intake of new teachers based on teaching techniques, life in Korea, and a sample introductory lesson. Each intake had between 50 – 80 people.

CCAP: Undertook guest presentations for the Cross Cultural Awareness Programme in schools throughout the Jeollanamdo province. The presentations were based on introducing New Zealand and its culture in order to raise awareness of different cultures and their customs.

 Iksan, Jeollabukdo, November 2010 – December 2012, and July – December 2014

Employed with Wonkwang University for 2.5 years to work in the Korean public school system teaching English to elementary and middle school students. Responsibilities were the same as teaching in Haenam as noted above. Additional responsibilities specific to this job included teaching in multiple schools thus having to be very flexible with teaching materials and coordinating with many Korean teachers. [Please note that employment finished in December 2014 due to the native English teacher programme coming to a close in Iksan.]

University English Instructor, Shenyang, China, November 2013 – July 2014.

Employed with Shenyang Institute of Engineering as a Business English teacher for Sun Wah International Business School, Liaoning University. Responsibilities included forming an adequate curriculum based on approved textbooks, monitoring students' progress and English fluency, and setting and marking all assessment for the Business English course. Additional responsibilities included preparing students for life in western countries and preparing for IELTS exams, in which they were required to achieve a certain score in order to be able to become an exchange student.

Guest Lecturer, Lincoln University 2007-2010.

Was invited to give lectures to students at Lincoln University twice a semester until departure to South Korea. Lectures concentrated on giving students practical knowledge of real working environments, and how their studies would help them in their post university life.

Tutor, Lincoln University 2006.

During the final year of studies, was chosen to tutor first year students in the Valuation and Property Management degree. Skills acquired included setting up lectures and activities, marking assignments, providing teaching and mentoring for students in a classroom setting, and learning how to teach international students with English as a second language.

Qualifications

University Education

Bachelor of Commerce specialising in Valuation and Property Management. Graduated in 2007.

ESL Education
100 Hour TEFL Course, which includes:

40 hour i-to-i TEFL course.

20 hour i-to-i TEFL 2 day course. An intensive weekend with a focus on practical teaching experience and observing teaching practice.

20 hour i-to-i TEFL grammar awareness specialist TEFL course. 10 hour i-to-I TEFL business English specialist course.

10hour i-to-I TEFL teaching with limited resources course.

Iksan Office of Education and Howard County Public School System 2 week intensive English teaching training course.
