Being a Police Officer demanded stability, integrity, initiative, intelligence – and a sense of humour. There were times when moral and physical courage were called for. The opportunities are great, but so are the responsibilities. Indeed, it is much more than just an occupation – it is an entire lifestyle, presenting a complete set of fresh challenges and opportunities to be confronted and enjoyed. Communication skills needed to be broad and adaptable to the situation — ranging from conveying authority to breaking bad news sympathetically. Tact, diplomacy and common-sense were all combined to deal with incidents and individuals in a manner that does not escalate problems.

A naturally decisive manner was necessary to enable appropriate action to be taken and potentially dangerous situations avoided or diffused. Physical fitness, mental alertness and emotional resilience are a prerequisite I have gained.

This is where I worked for a leading pharmaceutical company. This role was mostly based in the laboratory following COSHH risk assessment guidelines as the chemicals being used had to be handled with care. Every prepared chemical composition was labelled according to its contents and despatched to relevant departments. Through this I developed a high level of hand-eye coordination and a high level of accuracy. Even though this involved individual assigned tasks using your own initiative, it was still essential to work with team members to achieve a consistency in supply and demand. I became more competent with my practical approach and more aware of the laboratory procedures.
